My Wedding Philosophy

Where do you start when planning the entertainment for your big day? It can be really confusing! Think about it. You’re going to have all different age groups there (not to mention all different tastes in music) and everyone is supposed to have a fabulous time?! Stressful to say the least.

Enter: Experienced Wedding DJ.

I know that you want everyone at your reception to have an enjoyable evening. And I also realize that I do this many times each year and you’re doing this (hopefully) once in your lifetime. So how do you make everyone happy? Is everyone going to like every song? Of course not, but you have to travel through the generations to be successful. It’s not about the destination. It’s all about the journey.

Weddings are largely recognizable by their music selection. For instance, when’s the last time you went to a wedding and didn’t hear Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond? Why do DJs play this so frequently? Trust me, it’s not necessarily because we like it. We play it because it’s a song our parent’s generation grew up loving. It has fond memories attached to it. At a wedding, we want to bring out those emotions that make people feel connected. That song is always a winner.

But that’s not to say that I don’t enjoy any older music. Some of my favorite music is from the 70’s and 80’s. I especially love Earth, Wind & Fire. I’ve probably played “September” at least a thousand times in my career, and I’m still not sick of it.

Sometimes when people see a younger DJ, they automatically think we are only going to play “newer” music that they don’t like. Truth is though, that I want to gain your trust by letting you know I’m interested in making everyone at your party happy – not just the younger crowd.

A typical wedding reception will start off with all your favorite wedding classics that people of all ages have come to know and love. Then the music will gradually become more modern and more catered to the couple’s taste. The trick is, to let people know that not only are they at a wedding, that they are at YOUR wedding. Your personality should be intertwined with music selection. Although, you have to be reasonable about it.

I, personally, am a big fan of Duran Duran. But when I got married, did I think my wedding guests would have enjoyed several hours worth of the 80’s glam rock group? Probably not. Did I have my DJ spike in a few Duran Duran songs at dinner? You bet I did. And it was just the right amount of reminder that you were attending MY big day.

So when you’re looking to hire a DJ, you want one who is interested in finding that balance. It will make all the puzzle pieces fall into place.

Read on, music lovers!
